Southend Easter Chess Festival, 6-10 April 2023
Rapid, standard, masters and amateurs, fide and ecf tournaments
This year’s Southend Easter Chess Festival is less than four weeks away, 6-10 April 2023, at Southend Adult Community College, Ambleside Drive, Southend, SS1 2UN. The venue is no more than 100 yards from Southend East station (c2c line), or if travelling by road there is a large free car park on the premises.
The Festival starts on Thursday 6 April – Maundy Thursday – with the 6-Round FIDE Rapid in three sections: Open, U1700, U1400. Players in the rating-limited sections will need to be within those limits in BOTH FIDE and ECF lists to be eligible.
The 65th Southend Easter Chess Congress takes place from Friday 7 April-Monday 10 April, over 7 Rounds of “classic” chess – one of the few 7-round congresses - each session all moves in 90 minutes plus 30 seconds a move. This equates to a 4 hour session for 60 moves, or longer if more moves are made in any game. Two rounds a day, at 11.00 am and 4.00 pm from Friday to Sunday, with the last round at 11.00 am on the Monday morning. Players may opt for up to two half point Byes in any round(s) but the last, if they request at the time of their entry.
Entry Fees are a flat rate of £45 for the Congress and £30 for the Rapid. Coupons are available for a 10% discount for Juniors U16, at 31 August 2022 and Seniors 60+. All details see links below.

Eligibility point for Ratings is the April Rating Lists, published on 1st April 2023. If you are one of those who have not yet entered, perhaps you are waiting for the April Rating Lists if this will affect your eligibility for a particular section. If this is you, we should like to hear of your interest and which section you wish to play in if your April rating permits. If you would like to indicate below, without commitment, your provisional intention to enter, when the April list is published, we will send you a reminder so that you can make a timely decision – there is less than a week from the publication of the April list and the first day of the Festival. The most critical jump is if your preferred section is the U1600, but your April rating comes out too high as the next section up, the FIDE and ECF U1900 would mean that you need to be an ECF Gold member, which will cost £12 to upgrade from Silver.
Running alongside the Festival will be the 2nd Southend Masters, a title norm event of 9 Rounds, starting on Thursday 6 April and running to 10 April, two rounds a day Thursday to Sunday with the last round on the Monday morning. The entry list for the Masters is closed, with a completed list of 10 entries, 9 Rounds all-play-all, including three GMS, five IMs and two FMs.
