You’ve heard of Fischer Random Chess, or perhaps you know it as Chess 960. This Chess variant was invented by former World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer, and has recently come into the spotlight thanks to Hikaru Nakamura and Magnus Carleson’s 2022 Championship Battle in Reykjavik.
The rules are simple:
Pawns remain the same
Bishops must be on opposite coloured squares
King must be on a square between the two rooks
Black’s pieces must be positioned equal and opposite to White’s pieces
All other rules of Chess remain the same
Each game will have a randomised arrangement of the back rank pieces, taking these rules into account.
