Our first event was in late summer 2016, a year after the club moved to their new premises. The event was run annually up to 2019 but had to be shelved in 2020 due to the pandemic. Starting back up again in March 2023 the tournament is now biannual with the next one on 31st August 2024.
Stradbroke Community Centre is set in parkland shared with the local primary school. There is a decent sized playing hall with room to comfortably fit in 120 players. We have a small kitchen are that houses a tuck shop providing sandwiches, hot and cold drinks, and other snacks. There are two car parks with space for up to 50 vehicles but there are also frequent buses to and from the city centre that pass close to the venue.
For those of you who don’t know Sheffield, you’ll find a welcoming city set amongst the foothills of the Pennines, with the Derbyshire Peak District also on its doorstep. There are two universities and a plethora of bars and restaurants, museums and art galleries, and then Meadowhall shopping centre is just a few miles away. The city has wished a fond farewell to its industrial past (iron, coal, cutlery) and given a warm hello to its new sports and leisure facilities. A great place to visit beyond the chess board.
Speaking of chess, Sheffield is on the up there as well. The Sheffield & District League boasts a healthy four divisions with teams from the fourteen local clubs of which Darnall & Handsworth is one. Apart from the league, last autumn saw the re-birth of the Sheffield weekend congress.
One other thing to mention here, is that 2025 sees the 40th anniversary of the formation of Darnall & Handsworth Chess Club and we’re already discussing how best to celebrate that milestone.
