All welcome for a fun day of chess in central London!
Visit the ChessFest website for full details of the festival
ChessFest, London’s largest-ever outdoor public chess festival, would like to invite all fans of GingerGM and their families and friends to join us as our guests from 11am to 6pm in Trafalgar Square on Sunday 18th July, 2021 for a fun, family day of chess in the heart of London.
ChessFest, organised by Chess in Schools and Communities and sponsored by XTX Markets, is a fun-packed celebration of chess aimed at bringing the whole community together through the enjoyment and learning of the game.
Entry to the outdoor festival and all its events on Trafalgar Square is completely free and open to all, and the event is being organised in cooperation with Westminster City Council to ensure the safety of participants. You are welcome to play in simuls against a Grandmaster or International Master, enjoy a lesson with a professional chess tutor, or simply play casual games with family, friends and other members of the public.
ChessFest will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Lewis Carroll's chess-themed children’s classic, “Alice Through the Looking-Glass” with a live chess game on a giant chessboard, in which 32 actors dressed as Alice Through the Looking-Glass characters will replay a game based on the book.
There will also be an Inter-City Chess Challenge played online as children from London play children from Liverpool, as well as a match between two prodigies, CM Shreyas Royal from London and Tani Adewumi from New York. Everyone on Trafalgar Square will be able to follow the action on a giant screen, adding to the enjoyment and festive atmosphere.
The Trafalgar Square celebrations will come one day after ChesssFest’s DecodeChess Rapidplay, held from 10:30am-5pm on Saturday 17 July at Manchester Square Garden, Marylebone, London W1U 3BN. The rapidplay will see the GingerGM himself, GM Simon Williams, playing against a total of 150 players including GMs Mickey Adams and GM Gawain Jones (due to popular demand, entries to this tournament are now closed.)
