A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, there was a magazine called Chess Circuit. Not to be confused this this newsletter, which is of course THE Chess Circuit. I published the magazine, not least because I ran a lot of tournaments, accumulated a lot of scoresheets, and could see that hundreds of great games were being lost along the way. The other reason was that, thanks to advances in desktop publishing technology, typesetting and printing a hard copy chess magazine had become simple and affordable.
The magazine, subtitled The Weekend Tournament Magazine, was aimed at club players who spent their weekends trawling the country, taking part in one day rapidplays and weekend tournaments (remember those?). We had some fantastic articles by well-known players - and some players who were later to become very well known such as the Ginger GM Simon Williams!
The first issue was October 1993, (covering the launch of the 4NCL founded by Chris Dunworth) and we published a new magazine every month, more or less.
Eventually (as people recognised my talents) I received a job offer I couldn’t refuse, from GM Murray Chandler at the excellent British Chess Magazine, and I put the publication of the magazine aside to edit and write for BCM for a few years.
Our final issue of the analogue Chess Circuit was number 13, in June 1995.
Now, I have decided to scan my back issues of the magazine and give them to you. The first issue is free, the other 12 issues are going to be available as pdf copies to all paid subscribers! Believe me, they got better and better!
You can download the historic first issue here - LINK. The scanning is a bit hit and miss (I did it with my phone), and if you are in possession of a better version (!) let me know. Let me know if the link works by hitting the like button, which is the heart-shaped icon somewhere near the top of the page…
